Submission on Finglas Luas Extension

Dublin Cycling Campaign has made a submission in support of the proposed Luas extension to Finglas.

Luas Finglas is a proposed project to connect Charlestown and Finglas area to the city centre by extending the Luas from Broombridge. The project includes a cycle and pedestrian path alongside much of the Luas line. The project promises to deliver new walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure that would give many people safe and sustainable travel options into the city, which will remove thousands of cars from the roads. The project is being run by Transport Infrastructure Ireland with funding from the National Transport Authority.

Dublin Cycling Campaign met with designers of the project before making the submission. The designers see the huge potential to create a safe and family-friendly cycle route from Charlestown, through Finglas to the Royal Canal Greenway.

The main issues we raised in our submissions were:

  1. The cycle route needs to be designed so that it is safe for everyone of all ages and abilities to use
  2. The existing gaps in the planned cycle route need to be filled in to make it a continuous cycle route
  3. The cycle route should not mix people walking and cycling. It should give everyone their own space with clearly marked crossing points.
  4. Transport Infrastructure Ireland need to plan for high-quality secure and covered bike parking near all of the Luas stops so that people can easily cycle to the Luas
  5. The proposed 600 space park and ride at the end of the line needs to be outside of the M50 otherwise it will bring hundreds of cars into a residential area
