South Dublin County Council Area Update

The SDCC group have been working on two significant consultations this month; the Dodder Road Lower (DRL) Consultation and the Canal Loop Urban Greenway Consultation. We welcome the continued investment in cycling infrastructure in the county, especially the allocation of road space within the DRL scheme and the intent to connect 20 schools within the Greenway scheme. In both our submissions we recommend segregation for pedestrians and cyclists and that the Greenway scheme needs to ensure barriers such as Kissing Gates are removed. These two schemes are important leisure and commuter routes, we look forward to seeing progress on them. We would encourage you to make your own submission here: https://consult.sdublincoco.ie/en/consultation/dodder-road-lower-part-8 before the 5 July. There was further positive news as the council presented the initial public consultation readout on the ambitious Cycle South Dublin plan. Following a review of the public submissions the project has been expanded to 63 routes and a total of 265km of extra infrastructure at a cost of €280 million. With 83% of respondents requesting new improved cycle routes it is evident that high quality infrastructure is the key to encouraging more people to have a safe alternative to the car in SDCC. We also hear that South Dublin County Council has secured €1 million for maintenance of cycle tracks in 2021. The council have launched a survey on parks usage. We will be writing to them to express concern about kissing gate barriers and how they restrict access for cyclists, wheelchair users and buggies and asking for segregated cyclist and pedestrian facilities, where feasible. We would encourage you to complete the survey https://consult.sdublincoco.ie/en/content/south-dublin-county-council-pa… (open till 21 May).
