Buckled Wheels 2

Buckled Wheels
Articles - plenty of activity

on 30-August-2000

There have been a few articles in the Irish Times relating to cycling in Dublin.

The first is a series of accounts of the struggles of everyday cyclists on their trials on getting around Dublin.

Next up is a piece about cycling tracks in Dublin, both existing and upcoming. The campaign's Eamon Ryan says a few words here.

And lastly is an interesting article concerning the push for greater driver awareness for cyclists by the Dublin Transportation Office and the DCC. This is something we have been advocating for a long time.

Thanks to Sean Mac Suibhne for letting us know about these articles in our email group. If you know of any more, please let us know. What would be ideal would be for these issues to get exposure not just in the Irish Times, but in the Sun, Mirror, and other broadsheets.

**UPDATE** Another article appeared on September 2 - Mayor puts weight behind car-free day.

Car-Free Update - We need your ideas!

It's official. Dublin is participating in European Car-Free Day this year.

It's happening on September 22, a Friday. Certain sections of the City Centre will be shut off to traffic. The current plan is that it will happen from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, and lots of events will be planned. It has the backing of Dublin City Council, so I'd imagine it will get exposure in the press.

The DCC would like you to share some ideas on what we could do on the day to bring cycling into the spotlight. Everyone is welcome to become involved. Email us here

Touring Ireland Cycling Guide

One of our members, Jerry McSweeny has produced an excellent guide to cycle touring in Ireland.

There are very few such resources out there, and Bord Fáilte's promotional material that we have come across is lacking in the area of cycling. Though the campaign's focus is primarily in Dublin, and especially commuting cycling in Dublin, this is an area we feel needs some attention.
Another one of our members, Brendan Ryan, has written an award winning paper - 'Guide for Cycling Tourists Arriving in Ireland'. There is going to be a collaboration between Brendan, Jerry and the Campaign to submit entries for two more awards coming up. These are the AIB Better Ireland Awards and the Guinness Living Dublin Awards.

Canal Plan
posted by DM
on 24-Apr-2000

The Dublin Cycling Campaign has made a submission on the proposed City Canals Plan and Environmental Enhancement scheme. It was on display in the City Council offices until 29 February last.

One of our members viewed the display of the proposed plan at lunchtime in the Dublin City Council offices at the Christchurch. No representative of the City Council was in attendance so I was unable to ask any questions or seek more information. The introduction to the plan expresses a desire to enhance the use of the canal by among other things, promoting the use of the canal as a cycling corridor. However there are no specific references to extra provision of cycling facilities within the detailed plan of the proposed works on display for the Grand Canal, Harolds Cross bridge to Rathmines bridge.
