We have been getting some more exposure in the Irish Times. This time it concerns the inaugral Golden Pedal Award. It is a small piece with a few words from Brendan Ryan about the rationale behind it and the upcoming event. If you want to find out more, have a look.

I have finally put together the ideas sent to me regarding accessories. Thanks to those that contributed. Views expressed are not necessarily my own. Any more bright ideas very welcome. Toe clips in Dublin? Foam padding on handlebars? (I'd love some but don't know where to get it in Dublin).

The Inaugral Golden Pedal

All that glitters is not gold.
We are organising an awards event, which will become annual, to recognise companies, organisations, other places of employment and schools which provide suitable facilities for their cycling commuting employees or members. The principal award will be known as The Golden Pedal Award. There will be other awards, and a special booby prize, The Rusty Chain Award

Here are some of the criteria we are assessing:

    • Secure and convenient bicycle parking
    • Changing rooms and showers
    • Allowances

If you would like to put forward a nomination, email us or contact us by post or phone telling us who, why, and where so we can go out and inspect it.
CLOSING DATE: 31 October 2000

Velo Mondial 2000 Report

There are plenty of reasons to go to Amsterdam but, for a cycle campaigner, few can beat the invitation to attend ‘Velo – Mondial’ – The 2nd ever World Bicycle Conference. So, at end of August, representing the Dublin Cycling Campaign, Damien Ó Tuama headed off to the country where there are 16.5 million bikes for a population of 16 million people.

Website on Cycle Facilities

on 30-September-2000

Niall O' Reilly has started a website to document with pictures and words the state of cycling facilities in Dublin. Here are words from the introduction:
"... believe that, in far too many cases, cycle paths have been implemented without sufficient attention to the design requirements and challenges of the specific case."
There is a definite need for this, and this is great work by Niall. These pages may be integrated into the DCC website soon. I feel it would be a good idea for this to expand into a general area related to cycling lane design and construction. It will focus on positive, usable lanes as well as those considered sub-standard.

We aim to make the most of it and will be very active on the day. Here are some of the things we will be doing. Some of these may be a little bit vague, so come along on the day to find out more.

    • Big Map
    • Three Boards Display
    • Strange and Wonderful Bikes
    • Membership and Enquiry Tent
    • Lunchtime Cycle
    • Picnic
    • An Evening Event: with music, games, prizes and snacks.

City Centre Cycle Routes
posted by DO'T
on 11-September-2000

We have a unique opportunity over the coming months to see the city centre beginning to be tackled to make it bike friendly. The Corpo will be employing one of the world's expert companies in Cycle Design to come up with some, what we hope will be, radical designs to make it bike-friendly. Now is the chance to make sure it is done as we want it:
a.) If there are city centre routes which you currently cycle and find particularly dangerous (or even ones which you would like to but are too afraid as they are too dangerous)or routes where you are required to take huge detours to get to your destination...
b.) Or any particulary dangerous junctions you use
c.) Or spots in town which are crying out for safe cycle parking... please make a quick list of them and email them to dcc@connect.ie marking them "DCC City Centre Design" and putting "For Damien" as the first line, as I will be working on this over the next while, and wish to draw on everyone's city cycling experience.

Thanks in advance, Much appreciated,
Damien O Tuama, Dublin Cycling Campaign
